The Buffalo Sabres have hired former New Jersey Devils Head Coach Lindy Ruff.
The Devils fired Ruff on Mar. 4 after the team underperformed this season and was replaced by Interim Head Coach Travis Green. Ruff was hired by the Devils before the 2020-21 season and finished his tenure with a 128-125-28 record. The Devils made the postseason once with Ruff.
The Sabres fired Don Granato immediately after their season ended and the Sabres replaced him just six days later. Ruff will now return to the Sabres where he coached once before. Ruff was the head coach of the Sabres for 15 seasons. He reached the Stanley Cup finals once in 1999 where they lost to the Dallas Stars.
The 64-year-old is the fifth-winningest coach in NHL history with 864 career wins. He won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s coach of the year in 2005-06 when he led the Sabres to a 110-point finish. He was the runner-up for the award in 2006-07 with Buffalo and 2022-23 (New Jersey) and a finalist in 2015-16 (Dallas).
