The Boston Bruins regained home-ice advantage with the win, the Vegas Golden Knights took a commanding 2-0 series lead and now head home and the Los Angeles Kings picked up a crucial win on the road in overtime.
A physical, hard-checking game saw the two teams combine for 60 hits in the first period and end the opening frame scoreless. Mitch Marner has been receiving a lot of criticism but made a great pass to set up the opening goal of the game. The Bruins responded in the second period in controversial fashion. A missed call on Charlie McAvoy and Marchand and Tyler Bertuzzi fighting during the play wasn't whistled down which led to Trent Frederic tying the game. Jake DeBrusk picked up his third power play goal early in the third but Bertuzzi tied halfway through the third. Marchand responded 28 seconds later. Jermey Swayman was once again stellar for the Bruins making huge saves all game long.
The Stars scored first but the resilient Golden Knights responded quickly. A slick pass by Jack Eichel set up Jonathan Marchessault's second goal of the playoffs. In the final two minutes of the second period, Noah Hanifin found a loose puck and was able to beat Jake Oettinger to give the Golden Knights the lead. The Golden Knights held the Stars to just five shots in the third period and none in the final 5:38.
Many times in Game 1, the Kings were almost afraid of Connor McDavid and gave him too much space. In Game 2, they checked him harder and tried to get to him before he got skating in space. They limited McDavid to just one assist that came on the mad advantage. The Kings veterans stepped up. Adrian Kempe scored twice, one of them he batted out of the air, Drew Doughty and Kevin Fiala each scored before Anze Kopitar scored the overtime winner.
The Kings will now head back home with the series tied at 1-1.
The Florida Panthers will look to take a 3-0 series lead tonight against the Tampa Bay Lightning but will have to do so without Sam Bennett. It was announced he will be out for at least a week with an injury. The Carolina Hurricanes are also looking to put themselves into the driver's seat with a win tonight against the New York Islanders.
