Here's a recap of the latest Devils' news and notes.
NEWARK, N.J. -- With the season right around the corner, New Jersey Devils fans are starting to get their hockey fix. Below is a recap of some of the biggest headlines from the past couple of days.
- MTV's Video Music Awards will take place at Prudential Center tonight. The Devils announced Nate Bastian will serve as a special correspondent on the red carpet before the show. The red carpet and official live Pre-Show begins at 6:30 p.m., while the main show starts at 8 p.m. This is the second year a Devils player will serve as a correspondent. Last season, it was Dawson Mercer who traded his hockey stick for a microphone.
- Jack and Luke Hughes' older brother Quinn was introduced as the next captain of the Vancouver Canucks on Monday. During his interviews, he, of course, mentioned his two younger brothers.
"They were proud of me, I think my brother Jack had a sense that possibly this could be happening, and my brother Luke was very proud of me as well," he said.
- Some players, including Curtis Lazar, Brendan Smith, Erik Haula, and Tyler Toffoli, attended the New York Jets game at MetLife Stadium on Monday night. The Jets would eventually beat the Buffalo Bills by a final score of 22-16, losing quarterback Aaron Rodgers in the process.
Who doesn't love a good plot twist to begin a new NHL season? Yesterday, Elliotte Friedman reported that Tomas Tatar had switched agents and is now represented by Newport Sports Management Inc. They also represent Devils forward Ondrej Palat and defenseman Colin Miller. Friedman additionally said Tatar is "believed to be leaning somewhere east."
Well, this morning, it was announced that the Colorado Avalanche signed Tatar to a one-year, $ 1.5-million contract.
"Tomas has been a consistent, productive player throughout his NHL career," said Avalanche General Manager Chris MacFarland. "He is a veteran winger who brings scoring depth to our middle six and can contribute at both ends of the ice. We are excited to have him under contract for this season."
He reunites with Miles Wood, who signed a six-year, $15 million contract with Colorado on July 1. Avalanche reporter Jesse Montano shared a photo of the two players skating together this morning. While it was rare, the two did spend limited time as linemates in New Jersey. Could a Tatar - Ross Colton - Wood line be in Colorado's future?
MSG Networks announced their 2023-24 Devils telecast schedule on Monday. Bill Spaulding, Ken Daneyko, Erika Wachter, and Bryce Salvador will all return for the upcoming season. MSG Networks will telecast 69 regular season games and four preseason games.
