WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Ahead of the New Jersey Devils Tuesday night game against the Washington Capitals, the organization announced two roster moves, including placing goaltender Vitek Vanecek on injured reserve retroactive to Feb. 10.
The team also activated defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler, who has been out of the lineup since Jan. 6. He is expected to play Tuesday night against his former team, the Washington Capitals.
The 28-year-old netminder suffered a lower-body injury in his last game against the Carolina Hurricanes on Feb. 10.
It was arguably his best performance of the season, as he made 30 saves on 30 shots in regulation before giving up the game-winning goal in overtime.
"He played a great game for us," head coach Lindy Ruff said. "I thought we played a really good first period to let him get into the game, didn't face a lot in the first, but he made some quality saves. And you know, with the talent (Carolina) has upfront, you're going to face some opportunities, but I thought our defending, our attention to detail around the net front was good, and when we had a breakdown, (Vanecek) made a good save."
Since Vanecek sustained his injury, Nico Daws has been the team's starting goaltender for the past four straight games, earning a 3-1-0 record. Akira Schmid has been serving as the backup.
Vanecek has struggled to replicate last season's performance, with a goals-against average of 3.18 and a .890 save percentage.
At this time, there is no timetable for when he is expected to return.
