Jesper Bratt is off to a strong start for New Jersey.

Through four games, the focus has been on New Jersey Devils forward Jack Hughes. The 22-year-old is off to a hot start with 10 points (four goals, six assists) and already has the likes of former teammate P.K. Subban talking about his potential MVP status.

While the spotlight will continue to shine on Hughes, the Devils have another young forward on their roster who has not only been contributing offensively but showcasing a well-rounded 200-foot game as well.

Jesper Bratt has turned things up a notch since signing his $63 million dollar contract in June. In addition to his eight points (three goals, five assists) in four games, he has been strong defensively and even added a physical element to his game.

Entering New Jersey's Oct. 16 game versus the Panthers, Bratt had six hits through two games, which was the second-most on the team behind defenseman Kevin Bahl. After four games, he has eight, which is tied with veteran blueliner Brendan Smith. Last season, the Swede amassed 24 hits in 82 games.

With the departure of Yegor Sharangovich, the coaching staff has utilized Bratt on the penalty kill, and during the preseason, Ruff explained the reason behind his decision.

"Give him that opportunity, use his speed inside the zone, see if we can spend less time (in the zone), and at the same time give us a real good counter-threat if we do break plays up," said Ruff. "I've liked what he's done so far. He's had good reads inside the zone, I think his quickness to get on the attack has been good. It gives us something to continue to work on."

The young winger had an impressive preseason and led the league with nine points. He already has three-multi point games to his name, and appears to be in midseason form. Bratt will look to extend his assist and point streak tonight when the Devils face the Montreal Canadiens.
