New Jersey Devils forward Dawson Mercer will be playing for Team Canada at the 2024 IIHF Men's World Championship.
Mercer started the season extremely slow. He played 10 games before registering a single point. He found his scoring touch eventually and ended up with 20 goals on the season but it was a new career low in assists and points for Mercer. In his first two seasons he scored 42 points and 56 but this year he only registered 33.
This will be the second time the 22-year-old will play for Canada at the World Championship. In the 2022 WC, he picked up five assists in 10 games.
Hopefully playing for Canada can boost Mercer's confidence. Players feel honoured to wear their country's jersey and tend to play some of their best hockey on the international stage. They bring that confidence into their offseason training and the results pay off when the next season begins.
Mercer will be joining six other Devils that have either committed, attending camps or pondering the decision of whether to play or not. As of now, Mercer is the only Devil on the Canadian roster.
Devils fans will have a lot to watch and look forward to when the tournament begins on May 10 in Prague and Ostrava.
