New Jersey Devils defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler will be out for an extended period of time after suffering a concussion in Monday's game against the New York Rangers.
HC Travis Green confirmed that Siegenthaler has suffered a concussion and will be out of the lineup for a while.
At the end of the second period, Rangers' centremen Matt Rempe caught Siegenthaler with an elbow to the head. Siegenthaler was forced to leave the game and Rempe was handed a five-minute major. The NHL Department of Player Safety handed Rempe a four-game suspension for his actions.
The 26-year-old Swiss defenseman has played in 49 games this season for the Devils scoring one goal and nine points. The Devils' blue line has been missing Dougie Hamilton for most of the season and it's now been reported that John Marino is day-to-day with an upper-body injury.
The Devils are six points back of the New York Islanders for the final wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference but their task of making the playoffs has just become even more challenging with the diminishing depth on defence.
To combat the injuries they are facing they have recalled Santeri Hatakka for the Utica Comets. Hatakka will play on the third pairing with Brendan Smith. Nick DeSimone will also return to the lineup and will play on the second pairing with Kevin Bahl. Rookies Luke Hughes and Simon Nemec will play together on the top pairing.
