New Jersey Devils forward Dawson Mercer spends his summers working on his carpentry skills and shares a photo of a bench he made of hockey sticks.
In mid-December, the New Jersey Devils hosted their annual Dads and Mentors Trip. This highly anticipated weekend saw each player invite one guest to experience what it is like to be a professional player and spend quality time with them.

Arguably, no dad made a bigger impact on the fans than Dawson Mercer's father, Craig.
Over the past two seasons, the patriarch of the Mercer family won the hearts of Devils fans with his colorful and, quite frankly, hysterical readings of the starting lineups.
In a social media video, he revealed one fun fact about his son.
"One fun fact about Dawson is that he is very creative. He gets the hockey sticks from here and made a bench in the past. He's made a shoe rack. He always takes on a project in the summer months."
Naturally, Mercer's carpentry skills piqued the interest of Devils fans, who crave to know more about their favorite players and their lives off the ice.
This season, Kristy Flannery of The Hockey News asked Mercer if he would share a photo of his off-ice skills. After he completed his exit interview, he delivered, sharing the picture below.
In an interview in December with The Hockey News, Mercer said he made the bench a couple of summers ago with his brother, dad, and cousin. Growing up, it was a hobby he always enjoyed and perfected over the years.
The 22-year-old recently wrapped up his third season in the NHL, playing in 246 straight games. He reached the 20-goal mark for the second consecutive season and finished the 2023-24 campaign with 33 points. He is set to become a restricted free agent this summer, and during his exit interview, he reiterated that he has always been proud to be a New Jersey Devil.
