The NHL Scouting Combine is underway in Buffalo, New York. The event allows organizations to learn more about the prospects' thought processes, personality, and physical performance through a variety of tests and interviews.

The New Jersey Devils hold the 10th selection in the upcoming 2024 NHL Draft, which will be held at Sphere in Las Vegas on June 28-29.

Devils general manager Tom Fitzgerald spoke to NHL.com's Mike Morreale and, during their conversation, provided an update on Jack Hughes, among other things.

"His range of motion is not completely full, but he's doing a lot of things (off-ice)," Fitzgerald said to Morreale. "He's working out to gain strength, a lot of plyometrics. He's really excited and is looking forward to getting to the gym every day, get stronger, and that's music to my ears. What's this kid going to be like when he puts on another 10 pounds of muscle?"

On April 9, New Jersey provided a medical update on Hughes, who was clearly battling an ailment.

"In recent conversations with Jack, his family and representatives, the Devils’ athlete care staff, and Devils’ Chief Medical Officer Dr. Jonathan L. Glashow, it was determined that Jack should be held out of game action for the rest of this season and proceed with shoulder surgery.

"He will undergo the surgery on April 10, which will be performed by Dr. Peter Millett in Vail, Colorado.

"Hughes is expected to make a full recovery to be available for 2024 New Jersey Devils Training Camp."

Hughes finished the 2023-24 season with 74 points (27 goals, 47 assists) in 62 games and concluded his season on a three-game point streak.
