After 76 career NHL games, rookie defenseman Luke Hughes' offensive upside is hard to deny. He is a skilled skater who possesses the same hockey IQ as his brothers, Jack and Quinn.
On March 29, against the Buffalo Sabres in KeyBank Center, the blueliner earned his 41st point of the season by assisting on Max Willman's first-period goal.
With that point, Hughes passed Scott Niedermayer for the third most points a rookie defenseman earned in a single season.
With eight games remaining, the 20-year-old can set a new record, passing Viacheslav Fetisov (42 points) and Will Butcher (44 points).
Additionally, Hughes' nine goals this season are tied with Bruce Driver for the second-most goals that a rookie defenseman earned in a single season in Devils' team history. He is two goals shy of tying Niedermayer, who scored 11 goals (1992-93 season).
The youngest Hughes brother will enter Tuesday's game against the Pittsburgh Penguins on a three-game point streak and has six points in his last five games.
His 41 points are tied with Minnesota Wild defenseman Brock Faber for second-most among rookies behind Chicago Blackhawks center Connor Bedard (57 points).
