With his game-opening goal against the Chicago Blackhawks on Friday, New York Islanders forward Brock Nelson hit the 20-goal mark for the eighth time in his career.
He became the seventh Islander to reach the mark that many times with the franchise, joining Bryan Trottier, Mike Bossy, Brian Sutter, John Tavares, Denis Potvin, and Clark Gillies to reach the mark eight times.
After Kyle Palmieri sent Hudson Fasching across the Chicago line on the left side, Fasching found Nelson driving towards Blackhawks goalie Petr Mrazek.
Nelson ripped a shot low glove side on Mrazek from the low slot to give the Islanders the game's first goal at 6:09 of the first.
Nelson cracked the Islanders' top-10 list in goals in the 2021-22 season and continued his rise the last two seasons. Nelson made his first All-Star Game last season with a 36-goal season, as well as winning the event's Accuracy Shooting contest.
On the all-time list, he's taken Bob Bourne, Bobby Nystrom, and Derek King off the top 10, now sitting eighth in franchise history with 261 goals.
The goal also gets Nelson one step closer to another milestone: 500 NHL points. Nelson could become the 12th player in franchise history to accomplish the feat, joining former teammates John Tavares and Josh Bailey.
