The New York Islanders knew how critical two points were against the Boston Bruins on Saturday night, especially after winning their last two games.
Two points they got, defeating the Bruins 5-1 for their third straight victory.
Here's how it happened:
The Islanders took an early 1-0 lead on a Kyle Palmieri goal at 3:32 in the first period. Noah Dobson sprung Palmieri on a breakaway where he shot it five hole on Boston Bruins net-minder Linus Ullmark. Anders Lee also earned an assist on the play.
Palmieri struck again with a goal on the powerplay at 5:27 to make the score 2-0 Islanders. Mathew Barzal fed Bo Horvat in the slot, who shot and produced a rebound that Palmieri drove home. Barzal and Horvat each recorded an assist on the play.
Palmieri found the back of the net yet again, scoring his first career hat trick as an Islander and his first since Oct. 30, 2019, at 12:19 of the first. Dobson started the play snapping a pass to Ryan Pulock who drove the net shooting and produced another rebound for Palmieri to bring home.
46 seconds into the second period, Anders Lee found the back of the net. Palmieri passed the puck to Pageau on a 2-on-1 before Pageau found Lee in the slot. Lee then hopped on the rebound to make it a 4-0 game.
Brock Nelson extended the lead to 5-0 at 10:24 of the second. Horvat caused a turnover in the Bruins zone passing the puck to Mike Reilly who found Nelson in front of the net who put the puck past Ullmark.
Marc McLaughin finally put Boston on the board at 14:30 of the second. James van Riemsdyk and Long Beach Native Charlie McAvoy picked up the assists on the goal.
