The New York Islanders needed a win against a depleted, lackluster Chicago Blackhawks team to salvage at least one win as they concluded their four-game mid-west road trip.
However, that didn't happen as they fell 4-3 to the Blackhawks in overtime Friday night at United Center.
Here's how it happened:
After being outshot 7-0 to start the game, Brock Nelson scored his 20th goal of the season low glove side on the Islanders' first shot of the game at 6:09 of the first.
Kyle Palmieri fed Hudson Fasching in transition before Fasching hit Nelson on the tape, crashing the net.
From that point on, the Islanders generated more, taking over the second half of the opening frame, but couldn't add to their lead.
The Islanders had plenty of chances to double their lead in the second but failed to execute as Mathew Barzal missed the net on a 2-on-1 while Mrazek closed up the five-hole on a Nelson point-blank chance.
Ilya Sorokin kept the Islanders in front at 10:55 of the second, stopping Blackhawks forward Cole Guttman's backhand breakaway chance.
Adam Pelech followed suit, breaking up a 2-on-1 with a diving slide shortly after.
Mrazek stoned Nelson five hole tet again with under 8:30 to play in the second after a defensive zone turnover.
After Boris Katchouk failed to score on a breakaway chance, he snatched up the loose puck and cycled to the top of the slot before beating Sorokin's glove side to the game at 1-1 with 47 seconds to play in the second.
Just 1:07 later, the Blackhawks took a 2-1 lead. After Sebastian Aho pinched, Colin Blackwell fed Joey Anderson for a back-door tapin with 47 seconds to play in the second.
The Blackhawks doubled their lead 5:10 into the third as after Noah Dobson pinched, Anderson found Jason Dickinson on the odd-man rush for a tap-in at the back post to make it a 3-1. game.
Bo Horvat made it a 3-2 game at 6:37 of the third as he beat Mrazek from the slot blocker side after a strong feed from Mathew Barzal for his 18th of the season.
Horvat snapped a three-game goal drought, while Barzal snapped a three-game point drought.
Kyle Palmieri tied the game at 3-3 with 7:10 to play in the third as he wrapped one past Mrazek for his 11th of the season. Dobson notched his second assist of the game, with Alexander Romanov earning the secondary assist.
The Islanders didn't allow a shot in the final 14:20 minutes of the third but allowed one 20 seconds into overtime as Seth Jones won it from distance.
