    The Islanders hold on.

    The Islanders hold on.

With Adam Pelech and Ryan Pulock back in the lineup, the New York Islanders defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-2.

For the first time since 1987-88, the Islanders have swept the Leafs in a season series.

    Here's how it happened:

After picking up a loose puck after a drop pass from Anders Lee in the neutral zone, Mathew Barzal put on the jets, protecting the puck as he broke over the Maple Leafs blue line before peeling back to find a patiently waiting Mike Reilly.

While Reilly's one-timer hit the post, Barzal cleaned it up to give the Islanders a 1-0 lead at 10:31 of the first.

Through the first 20 minutes, the Islanders out-shot the Leafs 13-11 and outhit them 19-10.

Ilya Sorokin was tracking the puck well and was rather aggressive, which helped control rebounds.

After Bo Horvat dropped the gloves with Simon Benoit after the Leafs defenseman went after Barzal, Leafs forward Mitchell Marner capitalized on a failed coverage, tying the game at 1-1 just 50 seconds into the middle frame.

Kyle MacLean's first NHL goal at 2:50 of the second gave the Islanders a 2-1 lead as he deked Leafs goaltender Ilya Samsonov out of his skates.

Sorokin was brilliant in the second, stopping 11 of 12 as New York took a 2-1 lead to the third period, their first third-period lead under Patrick Roy.

Auston Matthews hit the cross-bar early in the third period after the Islanders lost him cutting into the low slot.

Oliver Wahlstrom took a penalty with 5:40 to play in the third, and John Tavares tied the score on a deflection with 4:48 to play in the third.

With 2:02 to play in the third, Pierre Engvall crashed the net and buried a Brock Nelson rebound to give New York a 3-2 lead.

The Islanders held on for the win.
