Each Labor Day weekend, Hockey Helps Inc. hosts a 24-hour hockey marathon on Long Island to raise money for local charities.

The event begins on Saturday morning at the Dix Hills Ice Rink, now known as the Clark Gillies Arena, in honor of the late New York Islanders legend, who made a significant impact in the community through various charities and foundations.

Despite having a rivalry during their playing days, former New York Rangers and Islanders lace up their skates and hit the ice with teams throughout the 24-hour period, coming together for the good of the community.

“The Hockey Helps Marathon is a powerful tradition that brings Long Island and New York City communities together for a cause that truly matters—raising vital funds for charities supporting those affected by addiction, mental illness, cancer, and economic hardship," Ryan Sweeney, a Long Beach local and Northwell Health Hockey Club member, told The Hockey News. "The energy is contagious: imagine playing alongside NHL legends like Adam Graves, Benoit Hogue, Arron Asham, Brian Mullen, and Colton Orr, as well as Olympians such as Megan Bozak. Meanwhile, the excitement off the ice doesn’t stop—raffles feature coveted prizes like game tickets, signed memorabilia, and once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

"Backed by Northwell Health and President Michael Dowling, we’re proud to field three full squads this year and bring so many more teammates into the effort. It’s a weekend about more than hockey—it’s about community, giving back, and forging connections that last.”

Since its inception, the Marathon has raised over $6 million for local charities, which embody the Hockey Helps mission “to help individuals struggling with addiction, mental illness, and cancer, and to provide support for children and youth facing economic disadvantages, illness, or related hardships.”
