Since the Draft Lottery came into existence in 1995, the Islanders have come away winners just twice in 30 years.

They won in 2000, selecting goaltender Rick DiPietro with the first overall pick before coming away victorious again in 2009, selecting John Tavares.

In 1999-2000, the Islanders were the fifth-worst team in the NHL but moved up four places. In 2008-09, Long Island was the worst team in the league and, fortunately for them, remained at No. 1.

This season, the Islanders finished as the 10th-worst team in the league.

The last time a team moved from No. 10 or higher into the top two was the Carolina Hurricanes in 2018, going from No. 11 to No. 2. They drafted Andrei Svechnikov

In 2020, the New York Rangers (No. 8-No. 15 with COVID-19 qualifying round) won the lottery, selecting Alexis Lafreniere

The Chicago Blackhawks (1999, 2007, 2023), the New Jersey Devils (2011, 2017, 2019), and the Edmonton Oilers (2010, 2012, 2015) are the leaders when it comes to winning the NHL Draft Lottery.
