According to industry sources, the New York Islanders will not be hiring a president of hockey operations at this time after hiring Mathieu Darche as their next general manager.

The Islanders' focal point after they announced that they weren't renewing Lou Lamoriello's contract was to find a GM and proceed from there.

They did talk with Ken Holland about the president's role, potentially having him come and fill Lamoriello's shoes in both executive positions. However, he chose to head to Los Angeles after Rob Blake decided to leave.

The Islanders asked the Toronto Maple Leafs (MLSE) to speak with their president Brendan Shanahan, and were rewarded permission on Wednesday. MLSE decided on Thursday that they would not be renewing Shanahan's contract.

It seemed that if Shanahan wanted the Islanders' president of hockey ops job, it was his. But, that did not come to fruition, likely due to who would be getting the final say, which Darche will have.

We await official wording from the Islanders on the Darche announcement.
