The New York Islanders will be announcing on Friday that they have hired Tampa Bay Lightning's Mathieu Darche as their next general manager:
Darche, 48, had been serving as Tampa's Director of Hockey Operations since 2019, adding assistant GM to the resume ahead of the 2022-23 season.
This will be Darche's first time as a general manager.
Darche played nine seasons (2001-2012) in the NHL after going undrafted following a four-year collegiate career at McGill University. Over those nine years, he played for the Columbus Blue Jackets, Nashville Predators, San Jose Sharks, and Lightning before ending his career with the Montreal Canadiens.
He hung up his skates following the 2011-12 season.
Since Darche joined Tampa, the team has never missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs. They won two Stanley Cups in 2020 and 2021, beating the Islanders in the Eastern Conference Finals in both runs.
The Islanders have yet to formally announce their next president of hockey operations. The expectation is that if Brendan Shanahan wants it, it's his.
