Fresh off advancing to the second round of the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs, the Carolina Hurricanes announced that they had signed forward Taylor Hall to a three-year extension worth $9.5 million ($3.17M AAV):

Hall, who Carolina acquired from the Chicago Blackhawks in the three-team trade that saw Mikko Rantanen land in Raleigh with Martin Necas and Jack Drury headed to the Colorado Avalanche, had 18 points (nine goals, nine assists) in 31 games following the move.

The 33-year-old has recorded three points (one goal, two assists) in five playoff games.

Hall was in the final season of a four-year deal worth $6 million annually.

How does his new contract impact the New York Islanders and their potential Kyle Palmieri extension?

What we know about the Palmieri extension is that, after being retained at the 2025 NHL Trade Deadline, his agent, Stephen Bartlett, was working with general manager Lou Lamoriello to come to terms on an extension.

However, by the end of the season, that extension had not been signed yet. And with Lamoriello not remaining as team general manager and president, we don't exactly know how that will impact the previous conversations.

If the Islanders have not yet signed Palmieri back -- we know how Lamoriello has operated in the past by not announcing already completed deals -- does Hall's deal impact the conversation?

Palmieri just concluded the final season of a four-year deal worth $5 million annually, and I had heard, along with others, that his extension was to come in under that price tag on a two-to-three-year deal.

One of, if not the most consistent players under head coach Patrick Roy, Palmieri struggled to produce after Brock Nelson was dealt to the Avalanche.

Palmieri, a top-six forward, finished the 2024-25 season with 48 points (24 goals, 24 assists) but only had seven points (four goals, three assists) in the final 21 games.

Hall, a top-six forward, finished the season with 42 points (18 goals, 24 assists) in 77 games, 46 of which came with the struggling Blackhawks.

The Islanders currently have a projected $28.3 million in available cap space, per PuckPedia, with 12 total free agents, including Palmieri.

It would be a slam dunk for the Islanders if they could get Palmieri at an AAV around what Hall just signed. Palmieri has made it clear that he wants to return, so taking a team-friendly deal is very much on the table.
