VANCOUVER -- Rookie defenseman Matthew Schaefer had another impressive night for the New York Islanders on Monday night.
He recorded two assists, one primary and one secondary, while also stopping a puck from crossing the goal line behind goaltender Ilya Sorokin in a 4-3 win over the Vancouver Canucks.
The first of his two assists marked his 20th apple of the season, matching Tim Connolly's 1999-2000 record for the most in a season by an 18-year-old in Islanders history:
His second assist gave him his 33rd point on the season, with 13 goals and 21 assists. He passed the puck to Ryan Pulock before No. 6 ripped a wrister blocker side from the slot, breaking Connolly's record.
This game gave Schaefer his second straight two-assist game and seventh multi-point game of the season.
Per NHL Live Stats: He tied defense partner, Pulock (7 GP in 2017-18) for the fifth most in a single season by a rookie defenseman in franchise history; Vladimir Malakhov (15 GP in 1992-93), Stefan Persson (14 GP in 1977-78), Denis Potvin (12 in 1973-74) and Bryan Berard (11 GP in 1996-97) top the list.
Per Islanders statistician Eric Hornick: Schaefer had been on ice for six straight Islander goals (and nine of the last 10) before DeAngelo's tally. Schaefer is the first rookie defenseman and third rookie overall to reach 20 assists this season. He finished with two shots on goal and now leads the Islanders, as well as all NHL rookies, with 124 shots.
