
New York Islanders forward Matt Martin is a pending unrestricted free agent. At 34 years old, given the grueling style in which he's played, this could be the final year of a tremendous career.
Martin has been a lifelong Islander -- outside of those two years in Toronto -- doing damage on the ice but also being one of the best role models in the community for young boys and girls.
Ahead of the 2024 NHL Trade Deadline, there was some belief that if the Islanders were going to sell, Islanders general manager Lou Lamoreillo would have asked Martin and his linemate Cal Clutterbuck -- another pending UFA -- if they wanted to be moved to Stanley Cup contenders.
We saw Lamoriello do that most recently with Zdeno Chara and Andy Greene in their final years, both declining to be moved.
One would think both players would have declined the move as well.
However, on WFAN's morning radio show "Boomer & Gio," Boomer Esiason, the former New York Jets quarterback and father-in-law of Martin, was accused by a caller of saying that No. 17 may have turned down a trade to the Edmonton Oilers.
Boomer made it clear that he never suggested such a thing and that he believed Martin would have turned down a trade because he loves Long Island and doesn't want to leave his family.
The caller, who clearly isn't a fan of the Islanders, said Martin turned down a trade so he could continue to play in front of "white trash animals in Long Island," amongst other things.
