Per a report, the Philadelphia Flyers spoke to the New York Islanders regarding St. Louis Blues defenseman Torey Krug, who would not waive his no-trade clause to go to the City of Brotherly Love.
Over the last few days, something was brewing between the St. Louis Blues and the Philadelphia Flyers.
Newly appointed general manager Danny Briere looked at the Flyers roster and has essentially decided to blow it up.
The rumored trade involved Kevin Hayes going to St. Louis -- which likely will still get done at some point but merely as a cap dump -- but a player on the Blues was unwilling to waive his no-trade clause.
Per multiple reports, that player was defenseman Torey Krug, who carries a salary-cap hit of $6.5 million annually through the 2026-27 season.
It's understandable why Krug would not want to go to the rebuilding Flyers, and it was completely in his right.
Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman added that Krug has a young family and isn't interested in moving, having already done so when he signed a seven-year deal with St. Louis as an unrestricted free agent in 2020.
So if the Flyers were going to make the deal work, they would need to flip Krug to a team he was willing to go to.
Flyers reporter Anthony Di Marco shared that Philadelphia spoke to the New York Islanders.
It's speculation that Krug would waive to come to Long Island, but one would think that Philadelphia wouldn't be wasting their time going down a dead end.
However, the Islanders lack cap space, with just $5.1 million and five unrestricted free agents they'd like to retain. They would have needed the Flyers to retain salary to make a deal work.
Note: Teams can go 10 percent over the salary cap until opening night.
The Islanders need a puck-moving defenseman, but the priority lies on the right side, and Krug's contract doesn't reflect his play anymore.
However, suppose the Islanders do lose Scott Mayfield in free agency and don't bring in a defenseman. In that case, it's not out of the realm of possibility that the Islanders bottom pair is Samuel Bolduc and Sebastian Aho to start the season.
Even if Mayfield is retained, the Islanders still have a need for another defenseman.
Krug may not be the player he once was, but the Islanders are slim on the backend, and they need a puck-moving defenseman if they want to improve.
