The New York Islanders entered Tuesday night, an off night, with a slim one-point lead in the wild-card race.

They will wake up Wednesday morning in the second wild-card spot following Tuesday's action.

Let's start with the positives for the Islanders.

The Pittsburgh Penguins, who started the night in the second wild-card spot, were smoked by the New Jersey Devils at the Prudential Center 5-1.

They remain one point behind the Islanders with no games in hand.

Now on to the bad news for New York.

The Florida Panthers, who trailed the Islanders by two points with a game in hand, battled the Buffalo Sabres, who entered the night six points back of New York with three games in hand.

The positive is that the two sides didn't head to overtime. The negative is that the Panthers won in regulation to tie the Islanders in points, as well as take the lead in the regulation win tie-breaker.

The Panthers now have 34 regulation wins, while the Islanders sit with 33.

Both the Penguins and the Panthers will be in action again Thursday night, as Pittsburgh hosts the Minnesota Wild while Florida hosts the Ottawa Senators.

The Sabres remain six points back of New York, with two games in hand, battle the Detroit Red Wings.

The Islanders magic number to clinch is eight points. but here's the situation.

It's unrather likely that the Penguins will catch the Islanders in regulation wins, currently 33-29.  The Penguins would have to win out in regulation, with the Islanders failing to earn one regulation win over their final four.

If the Islanders go 4-0-0, then the Penguins can't catch them, even if they go 4-0-0 themselves.

The New York Islanders do not play again until Thursday when they host the Tampa Bay Lightning at 7:30 PM ET.
