Mathew Barzal now has a new career high in the goals department.

ELMONT, NY -- New York Islanders forward Mathew Barzal has had a tremendous season. He's shot the puck at a rate he's never done at the NHL level, leads the NHL in takeaways, and has transformed, alongside Bo Horvat, into more than just a playmaking forward.

On Thursday night, not with Horvat for a long stretch now, has set a new career-high in goals, scoring his 23rd goal of the season against the Florida Panthers:

The Hockey News caught up with Mathew Barzal after their 6-3 win over the Winnipeg Jets last Saturday. In that game, Barzal tied his career high, and he discussed what it meant to him to get back to that mark in the goal department.

"You definitely need to score goals," Barzal said. "I do love passing, and I think that a big part of my game was making plays. I've always been a playmaker, even since I was younger. But scoring goals is an element of my game that I'm always trying to grow. I want to be a complete player, scoring more goals, forechecking, takeaways, all those kinds of things that bring you to the next level. That's my goal, to be better at those things."
