The New York Rangers narrowly edged the Carolina Hurricanes for a 1-0 win on Tuesday night.
It was all defense and goaltending tonight as New York only needed one goal. Adam Fox was the lone goal-scorer who won the game for the Rangers.
The Rangers secured their 90th point of the season with the victory and extended their Metropolitan Division lead over Carolina to six points.
Igor Shesterkin recorded his third shutout of the season in the win. It’s also Shesterkin’s second straight shutout after he blanked the Blues in a 4-0 win on Saturday.
Shesterkin made all 28 stops in a defensive shutdown game for the Rangers.
Pytor Kochetkov was the losing goaltender for Carolina, saving all but one Ranger shot, which came in the dying seconds of the first period.
Jake Guentzel made his Hurricanes debut after being traded from the Pittsburgh Penguins ahead of last week's trade deadline.
Matt Rempe did not play in this game as he is serving the first of a four-game suspension.
Here's how it happened:
After 19:52 of scoreless play, Fox broke the ice and gave the Rangers a 1-0 lead.
Ryan Lindgren received the puck at the left point and fired a shot that ended up deflecting off of Chris Kreider. The ricochet went right to Fox at the right point, who fired it past Kochetkov eight seconds before the first-period horn sounded.
The Rangers dominated the Hurricanes in shots, leading 12-5 after 20 minutes. Both teams were 0-for-1 on the power play in the first period.
Shesterkin had a huge second period for the Rangers to preserve New York’s 1-0 lead.
The Hurricanes outshot the Rangers 12-5 in the second.
Shots were even at 16 apiece after 40 minutes.
With 1:40 to go, Barclay Goodrow tried to shoot the puck long down the ice into the empty net but missed and iced the puck. Carolina called their timeout seeking the game-tying goal.
New York iced the puck multiple times in the last minute, but solid structure in the defensive zone slowed down any chance of the Hurricanes tying the game.
