The Rangers went with the good ol' tic-tac-toe shorthanded tally late in the second period.
NEW YORK, NY -- At 15:40 of the second period, with the New York Rangers up 3-2, defenseman Erik Gustafsson took a delay-of-game penalty.
After a strong start to the penalty kill, the Capitals tried to regroup in the neutral zone, sending the puck across the ice to Alex Ovechkin.
However, an aggressive Mika Zibanejad got his stick on an Ovechkin pass attempt, leading a rush into the Capitals' zone.
With Chris Kreider's stick on the ice a few feet away from his penalty-kill partner, the two connected for a give-and-go, drawing everyone down low in the offensive zone, which allowed K'Andre Miller to cut in, un-manned.
Zibanejad made a quick pass to Miller, who had all the time in the world to pick his spot before roofing one over the glove of Lindgren to give the Rangers a 4-2 lead at 16:52 of the second.
The Rangers headed to the third with a commanding 4-2 lead.
