The Rangers continue to soar, while the Islanders continue to shoot themselves in the foot.
EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ -- For the first time this season, the New York Rangers and New York Islanders went to battle on the MetLife Stadium Field.
The Rangers extended their winning streak to seven games as the Islanders collapsed for a third-straight loss.
Here's how it happened:
The Islanders hopped on the Rangers early, but it was the away team who lit the lamp first. Defenseman Erik Gustafsson lasered one past goalie Ilya Sorokin at 1:28 of the first period for an early 1-0 lead.
At the center-ice dot, Islanders forward Matt Martin dropped the gloves with Rangers rookie Matthew Rempe, who became the first player to make his NHL debut during a Stadium Series event:
Brock Nelson, who scored the Islanders' lone goal at the Stadium Series in 2014 at Yankee Stadium, tied the game at 1-1 at 4:20 of the first, scoring from the slot over the glove of Igor Shesterkin:
Bo Horvat gave the Islanders their first lead of the night as he beat Shesterkin under the blocker off the rush at 7:18 of the first:
Mathew Barzal scored 14 seconds later, at 7:34 of the first, to extend the Islanders lead to 3-1, leading to Rangers head coach Peter Laviolette calling a timeout:
Islanders captain Anders Lee, who got called up soon after the Islanders Yankee Stadium Series outing, scored at 1:03 of the second, deflecting a Pierre Engvall shot through the legs, a between-the-legs deflection, to extend the Islanders lead to 4-1:
The Rangers got one back at 5:36 of the second after Artemi Panarin's slot shot deflected off Vincent Trocheck and in to make it a 4-2 game:
The Rangers made it a one-goal game before the end of the second, with Trocheck scoring his second of the game at 18:24.
After Sorokin couldn't hold on to an Alexi Lafreniere shot, Trocheck flipped it over the Islanders' goaltender and in to make it a 4-3 game.
The Islanders got the critical next goal, as Alexander Romanov buried a pass toward the blocker-side post at 1:53 of the third to give the Islanders a 5-3 lead.
Chris Kreider got the Rangers within one at 15:50 of the third after he deflected home a Panarin shot on the power play to make it a 5-4 game:
The Islanders failed to get out of their own way, taking a penalty before Mike Zibanejad scored at 18:31 of the third to make it a 5-5 game:
The Rangers only needed 10 seconds of overtime play before Noah Dobson turned the puck over, leading to Panarin's game-winning tally for the 6-5 win:
The Rangers continue to soar while the Islanders continue to shoot themselves in the foot.
