    The New York Rangers showed fight led by Vincent Trocheck's two goals, but fell short in the shootout Saturday, falling 4-3 to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

    The New York Rangers showed fight led by Vincent Trocheck's two goals, but fell short in the shootout Saturday, falling 4-3 to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

    In an Original Six matchup, on a Saturday night in Toronto, The New York Rangers showed fight, but fell short in the shootout, falling 4-3 to the Maple Leafs. 

    In the first period, Alexis Lafreniere kicked off the scoring with 8:27 remaining in the first period. 

    After a failed Maple Leaf clearing attempt, Adam Fox made a great shimmy move before hitting Lafreniere with the puck. He walked into the slot and sniped the puck blocker side, where it exited the net very quickly.

    The 1-0 Ranger lead held into the first intermission. However, The Maple Leafs led the shots 13-9 after one period.

    Toronto tied the game up at one 3:54 into the second period. Mitch Marner received the puck after Matthews won the draw to the side. Marner drove towards the net, fanned on his initial shot and then slid the puck past Shesterkin.

    The Rangers regained their lead 5:30 into the second, also just 1:36 after the Maple Leafs tied it up. A pretty passing play went from Panarin, to Lafreniere to Trocheck who one-timed the puck into the net.

    William Nylander evened things up at 2-2 at the 8:54 mark. He skated towards the blue line before cutting forward and floating the puck on net, where it slipped into the net. The goal was assisted by Max Domi and Jake McCabe.

    After two periods, the Rangers and Maple Leafs were deadlocked at two. Toronto once again had more shots, as they took ten to New York's six.

    John Tavares gave the Maple Leafs their first lead of the night with 12:43 remaining. The score was 3-2 and the goal was assisted by Calle Jarnkrok and Morgan Rielly.

    Matt Rempe and Ryan Reaves did fight, as they scrapped with just under six minutes to go in the game.

    Trocheck scored his second of the game on a rebound to tie the game at three for the Rangers. New York tied it with just 1:08 remaining on the clock.

    The game-tying tally was assisted by Lafreniere and Panarin, the second time that duo assisted a Trocheck goal tonight.

    The Rangers and Maple Leafs needed overtime and then a shootout to decide on a winner.

    Zibanejad scored the first shootout goal but it was immediately matched by Mitch Marner.

    Max Domi had the shootout winner to give the Maple Leafs the win.
