On November 2nd, 1975, New York Rangers legend Eddie Giacomin made his return to Madison Square Garden.
Stanley Cup Final appearance in 1972 Giacomin was cut after a sluggish start in 1975. General Manager Emile "The Cat" Francis was shedding old robust contracts and veterans to bring in new players like John Davidson. The Detroit Red Wings signed him on October 29th. The Motor City's next game was in New York just a few days later.
The 'Wings would start the all-time Ranger in the arena he called home, against opponents he called teammates. Tears ran down Eddis's face as the anthem played.
Fans adored Giacomin so much, that the anger following his departure culminated in an emotional chanting frenzy. They chanted his name. They hollered after every save. They booed the Rangers when they scored a goal. Giacomin and the Red Wings won the contest 6-4.
His jersey hangs in the rafters at the world's most famous arena, retired in 1989. He is third all-time in wins, second in shutouts, and fourth in appearances in New York Rangers history.
