Within three days Sean Monahan was traded from the Montreal Canadiens to the Winnipeg Jets and Elias Lindholm from the Calgary Flames to Vancouver Canucks.

The Rangers need a 3C replacement. Two valuable names are already off the board over a month before the trade deadline.

New York could consider Philadelphia Flyers center Scott Laughton as a new option. Darren Dreger of TSN reported on Thursday that the Flyers could shop the depth grinder.

Laughton, 29, has recorded 20 points (five goals, 15 assists) in 50 games for the surging Flyers this season. He currently is signed to three more years with a $3 million AAV.

"A pretty all-around player with good leadership abilities. Plays a strong two-way game and reads the game exceptionally well," read his Elite Prospects Scouting Report.

"Not overly flashy, but can put up some points on the board. Good penalty killer and skater. Likes to play the body."

The Rangers are in the hunt for a depth pivot that can build a bottom-six identity and either turn the threesome into a checking line with high offensive upside, or a trio of muscle.

The center market is a pretty empty rack at the story right now. The Rangers are going to have to consider all options, even if that is staying pat and seeing what Jonny Brodzinski can do while general manager Chris Drury gets active on the phone.

Sean Monahan was never an option for the Rangers according to Arthur Staple of the Athletic.

The Jet's shiny new toy has 35 points (13 goals, 22 assists) in 49 games this season. He only recorded five of those lamp lighters at even strength, which would not benefit the Rangers who are struggling in that department.

Lindholm would have been a steep price for the Rangers to acquire, and with the hope that Chytil is back next season the two-way player would have been a rental.

Both players cost a 2024 first-round pick. Lindholm required four assets to obtain, and Monahan demanded two draft selections.

An adaptable open mind is required to continue to tread the waters ahead of the March 8 trade deadline.
