If you had told a young Stefen that he would get the privilege to cover the New York Islanders and the New York Rangers for The Hockey News, he would have told you to go skip rocks.
From dreams to reality.
I am incredibly excited to help contribute to the Rangers side of things starting today, working alongside the talented Stan Fischler and the up-and-coming Matthew Mugno in providing the best Rangers coverage possible for the fan base.
If you have been following my Islanders coverage, I can't tell you how much that means to me, as your support is the reason I have been able to do what I love on a daily basis.
And if you are a new follower of mine, let me tell you a little bit about myself.
I was around 10 years old when I fell in love with hockey. I became obsessed with the goaltender position, begging my dad to get me pads and sign me up for every clinic imaginable.
That started a never-ending love for the position, and growing up, Henrik Lundqvist was the guy. His competition, drive, and, above all else, his accountability made him one of the most well-respected goaltenders to man the crease.
While Lundqvist was an incredible goaltender, I modeled my game after current New York Rangers backup Jonathan Quick.
His lateral movements in the crease was (and is) like art and I even donned No. 32 in his honor.
Now, I know that was a dark time for Rangers fans when Quick was at the top of his game, but seeing as he is one of the best stories in the NHL this season and is donning the red, white, and blue on Broadway, I thought this was a safe space to mention that.
When the reality became clear that becoming an NHL goaltender wasn't in my deck of cards, I knew working in hockey was a more realistic option.
I discovered my passion for sports journalism and podcasting my sophomore year at SUNY Cortland. I interned at NHL Network in the summer of 2018 before interning for the Binghampton Devils of the American Hockey League for their 2019-20 season, before COVID-19 ruined the fun.
Flash forward a few years, after a few writing gigs, I found a home at The Hockey News last March. Working for such an iconic brand in the hockey world has been a privilege, and I'm eager to bring my passion for the sport to the Rangers side of things.
Islanders fans, don't you worry one bit. I'm sorry you are stuck with me; that content won't stop, not even for a second.
For the Rangers fans, I'm excited for you to get to know me and allow me to bring some creative content your way.
