I'm not one to mess with a winning formula, but what can the New York Rangers find a way to get more out of Blake Wheeler?
This week on The Blue Crew podcast, my co-host Avery Zaretsky and I discussed Blake Wheeler and his current role on the third line.
The discussion is here:
Just for perspective, we recorded this episode prior to the game against the Edmonton Oilers, which Peter Laviolette said was Wheeler's best game of the season.
Considering that the Rangers are on a three-game winning streak, now isn't the time to change anything. With that said, this early in the year it never hurts to throw some stuff at the wall and see what sticks.
Last season with the Winnipeg Jets, Wheeler potted home 55 points (16 goals, 39 assists) in 72 games. Through the team's first seven games, he has yet to record a single point. Although, last night he had an assist taken away from him after Will Cuylle's goal was waved off for a distinct kicking motion.
It might not feel like it at the moment, but Wheeler has a very important role on this team. Yes, they're winning hockey games, but once he gets going this group could be even scarier.
