There is a lot to unpack from the Rangers' move to send Brett Berard down to the AHL.
On Friday, the New York Rangers sent Brett Berard down to the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League.
According to Mollie Walker of The New York Post, the move to promote Bo Groulx in favor of Berard was made to have more options at center with Filip Chytil out with an upper-body injury.
The big question is will Berard be back with the Rangers? Right now, that question is unclear.
Since getting called up earlier this season Berard has been playing some excellent hockey for the Rangers as he flashed his potential.
In 19 games, the 22-year-old forward recorded three goals, four assists and seven points while averaging 11:20 minutes.
Berard seemed to solidify a prominent role with the team, which is why the move to send him down came as a surprise.
It remains a mystery whether Berard will be in the AHL temporarily or not.
The Rangers have a crowded forward room with the likes of Matt Rempe, Jimmy Vesey, Jonny Brodzinski and now Arthur Kaliyev all vying for playing time.
However, Berard was proving to be one of the Rangers’ most impactful forwards in terms of his speed and gritty style of play, so the team might be doing themselves a disservice by sending him down.
Time will tell to see what lies ahead for Berard.
