The New York Rangers made a move to bolster their defensive core around the time of the 2025 NHL Trade Deadline by acquiring Carson Soucy from the Vancouver Canucks.

With Soucy being under contract past the 2024-25 season, Rangers president and general manager Chris Drury believed that Soucy was a player who could become a staple on the blue line.

“He’s someone we could have in for the rest of the year and next year,” Drury said of Soucy. “I just like the overall game – the size, the skating, the sense, how he defends. We were able to do some homework on him the last couple weeks and we’re excited to get him with a piece we got in the Reilly Smith trade.”

Unfortunately for the Rangers, Soucy’s few weeks with the team didn’t exactly live up to their expectations.

The 30-year-old defenseman was held out of the lineup on multiple occasions and didn’t seem to fit into the Rangers’ system.

Now, just months after trading for Soucy, there’s a possibility he’s on his way out of New York already.

According to The Athletic’s James Mirtle, Soucy is potentially available via trade.

In 16 games with the Rangers, Soucy recorded one goal, two assists, and three points while averaging 16:14 minutes.

It’s unclear exactly what sort of return Soucy would garner, but Drury seems to be open to all possibilities in terms of making trades to shake up the roster.

The Rangers made some significant changes to their defensive core during the 2024-25 campaign and now they might be looking to re-shape it even further during the offseason with K’Andre Miller also being the subject of trade rumors as well.
