Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports - Contract Talks With Igor Shesterkin Will Reportedly Stop If Not Agreed By Opening Night

The New York Rangers contract talks with Igor Shesterkin remains a mystery.

When Rangers general manager Chris Drury was asked about it, he did not go into any specifics and refused to reveal very much at all while Shesterkin opted to more or less dodge the topic entirely.

According to Mollie Walker of the New York Post, contract talks will stop if a deal is not reached by the season opener.

“Igor Shesterkin stressed his desire to keep his mind on his game when fielding questions about his pending unrestricted free agency next summer,” Walker wrote. “So if negotiations don’t resume and a deal is not reached over the next two weeks or so, as The Athletic first reported, there likely won’t be any during the season, The Post confirmed.”

A previous report came out from the New York Post stating there’s reason to believe that Shesterkin’s camp is aiming for as high as $12 million a year, which would make him the highest paid goalie in the NHL.

When talking about his current contract citation, Shesterkin made clear about his desire to focus on hockey as opposed to things he can’t control.

“I have one more year,” Shesterkin said. “I don’t care about it… It’s work for my agent. I just want to be focused on my game and on practice everyday…

“I love the organization. I love the team. I love the fans. So of course, it would be great to stay here, but you never know what can happen.”

This time will be the best opportunity for the Rangers to finalize a deal with Shesterkin before things could get out of hand.

The 28-year-old is set to become an unrestricted free agent next offseason and if he hits the open market, there will surely be other teams willing to pay him exactly what he wants.

That’s why it’s important for the Rangers to take care of this as quickly as possible or else they could be in a world of trouble.
