During Tuesday’s practice, all eyes were on Gabe Perreault as he joined the New York Rangers for the first time.
Perreault agreed to a three-year, entry-level contract with the Rangers on Monday shortly after the Boston College Eagles were eliminated in the Manchester Regional Final, ending his collegiate career.
One day, Perreault is fighting to win a national championship, and the next day, he’s in New York getting ready to make his NHL debut.
It’s been a quick turnaround for the 19-year-old, but he’s excited to start the next chapter of his career. He knew his time to play professional hockey was now.
“It wasn't an easy decision at all. Leaving those guys, a lot of my best friends – brothers for life,” Perreault said. “So, it wasn't easy, but I just thought it was the time to take the next step. I thought, with my brain, I was definitely ready.”
Since being selected by the Rangers with the 23rd overall pick in the 2023 NHL Draft, Perreault has been the most hyped-up prospect in New York’s pipeline.
Between his speed, vision and offensive intangibles, Perreault has it all and he’s only grown as a player through his time at Boston College.
While his small frame may concern some, Perreault has made it a priority to get stronger and feels his game will still translate well to the NHL.
“Physically, I took a big step, gained some weight,” said Perreault. “And I think the other biggest thing I was focused on going back to school was the details of my game – offensively and defensively. … On the forecheck, I took a big step.
“That was definitely one of them. And defensively, just trying to not get beat as much, and do little things where I get pucks out, knowing when it’s the right time to make a play. It’s things like that that are going to help me translate now.”
The young forward is expected to make his Rangers debut on Wednesday night against the Minnesota Wild. He’ll likely slot on a line alongside J.T. Miller and Alexis Lafrenière.
He also took some reps on the second power-play unit, which is something to watch out for.
Perreault’s arrival has been talked about for so long and it’s finally here.
For Perreault, you could tell he was a little overwhelmed by all the cameras on him following Tuesday’s practice, but that nervousness comes with a certain level of excitement to play for a legendary franchise the likes of the Rangers.
“It means a lot, I mean such a special organization,” Perreault said about playing for the Rangers. “Original six, everything about it. Been treated unbelievable since I was drafted…
“It’s definitely something I dreamed of growing up and especially since I got drafted. Obviously the history behind the building (Madison Square Garden) is unbelievable, so when the opportunity comes it will be super exciting.”
