Gerard Gallant’s NHL coaching days may be over, at least for now.
According to TSN’s Pierre LeBrun, Gallant is headed to Russia to coach in the KHL as there should be an announcement next week.
Gallant hasn’t served as a head coach since his stint with the New York Rangers from 2021-23.
In his first season in New York, he led the Blueshirts to the Eastern Conference Final where they eventually lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning.
However, during the 2022-23 season, the Rangers failed to live up to those same expectations and lost in the first round to the New Jersey Devils.
Following their loss to the Devils, Rangers president and general manager fired Gerard Gallant and hired Peter Laviolette to replace him.
The 61-year-old coach is reportedly still under the impression that he is not entirely to blame for the Rangers’ past failures and he remains eager to coach again.
Gerard Gallant Reportedly Still Looking To Prove Rangers' Past Failures Were Not Entirely His Fault
Over two years after the New York Rangers fired him, Gerard Gallant is still searching for another head coaching job.
“I don’t know if he’s (Gallant) been in any of these particular interviews this year, I just don’t know,” Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman said. “I have heard he’s eager to prove that when he got let go by the Rangers, It wasn’t only about him, and he wants an opportunity to show people that. We’ll see if he gets an opportunity with teams to talk about that.”
Now, Gallant gets to prove himself in the KHL, and maybe we’ll one day see him back behind an NHL bench.
