Here's the story of a failed attempt to recreate the Rangers logo.

When John Ferguson took over as Rangers general manager in the late 1970's he decided to revolutionize the team's jerseys.

The original design, dating back to the team's origin in 1926, had R-A-N-G-E-R-S letters featured diagonally.

Fergie's new outfits featured the team's crest on the front of the uniform. To folks like me – not to mention fans – it looked somewhere between cockeyed and awful.

"We're delighted by the design," said Ferguson. (Then again what else could he say?)

Fergie went on: "The uniforms are handsome, contemporary, colorful and very much in keeping with the 'New Look' we'll be putting forth on the ice."

When Ferguson promoted Jean-Guy Talbot as Blueshirts head coach, the freshman mentor added another "New Look" – he became the first NHL head coach to wear a tracksuit instead of a tie behind the bench.

The "New Look" became an old look very quickly. Shortly after a disastrous 1977-78 season out went Fergie as club boss while the MSG suits also said "adieu" to Talbot.

And – as you may have guessed – the "New Look" crested jersey became as extinct as the Dodo Bird along with the Talbot tracksuit!
