Crazier things have happened in the hockey world than Lou Lamoriello potentially joining the Rangers staff.

    Here's how it could happen:

    1. Lou and Rangers boss Jim Dolan are friends dating back decades.

    2. Lou loves hockey too much to retire at this point in his life.

    3. Ever since Glen Sather retired as head of Dolan's private braintrust, Jimmy has lacked a high profile, well-connected savvy insider. Lou could be it!

    4. 'Way back, when Dr. John McMullen owned the Devils and Lou was Mac's winning g.m., I heard rumors that the Rangers wanted Lou to leave East Rutherford for Seventh Avenue. He preferred building a three-Cup-winner in New Jersey.

Mind you, my suggestion that Lou could fit in the Rangers hierarchy has nothing to do with Chris Drury who seems set in his GM role. That said, considering how busy Dolan is with his Knicks and other enterprises, I confidante like Lou woud be a huge asset.

So, we'll sit back and see if all the round pegs fall into the round holes, with my Lou theory.

Quite frankly,  it wouldn't hurt the Blueshirts to have a seasoned executive a rung above Drury; to keep an eye on the G.M.

As for the Islanders, owners Scott Malkin and Jon Ledecky also have to address a personnel issue – Patrick Roy.

Does he remain coach or move up to manager, or simply get the boot just as his former boss, Lamoriello, did.

    Fascinating stuff, isn't it!
