The Rangers could make a lineup change involving Jonny Brodzinski and Arthur Kaliyev.
The New York Rangers have had a consistent lineup that was untouched for weeks, but that all changed during Thursday’s practice.
Jonny Brodzinski was seen taking reps on a line with Filip Chytil and Chris Kreider while Arthur Kaliyev was off to the side for a large part of practice.
Obviously, that doesn't necessarily mean Brodzinksi will replace Kaliyev for Saturday afternoon’s game against the Boston Bruins, but it’s a sign that Brodzinski will slot into the lineup.
Kaliyev has played in practically every game since the Rangers claimed him off waivers on Jan. 6 and while he’s shown some positive flashes, he’s gone through some growing pains, which is normal for any 23-year-old player.
“I think there have been times where he's been good, he’s been productive and that was just practice,” Peter Laviolette said. “I think there is room for growth and there are things that he’s done well for us as well.”
Part of the adjustment for Kaliyev has been due to the fact that a fractured clavicle left him out for multiple weeks prior to his arrival in New York, and the Los Angeles Kings didn’t play him even when he was available.
“I think getting the pace back up to speed and the battle sometimes takes some time if you haven't been involved for a long stretch of time,” Laviolette emphasized about Kaliyev’s adjustment.
“Those are areas we talk to him about, showing him the speed of the game and the compete and the battles, but there have been times he has been good too and he has used that to his advantage to get his shot off. It’s just about getting up to speed.”
In 10 games with the Rangers, Arthur Kaliyev has recorded two goals, one assist and three points while averaging 11:08 minutes per game.
Brodzinski hasn’t played since Jan. 11, but with the Blueshirts finding themselves on a two-game losing streak, Laviolette will likely make a lineup change involving the 31-year-old forward.
