There is a new update regarding the New York Rangers and Igor Shesterkin’s contract situation.
According to NHL insider Frank Seravalli, the Rangers are not fazed by the reported regular season deadline to strike a deal with Shesterkin.
Seravalli also added that locking up Shesterkin remains a priority for the Rangers as there is an urgency to have him signed long term.
This all comes after a previous report came out stating contract talks will stop if a deal is not reached by the season opener.
Based on the words of both Shesterkin and Chris Drury, it seems both sides are determined to get a contract extension signed and it’s a matter of when it will happen not if.
It would be ideal for the Rangers to finalize a deal before the start of the season in October in order to avoid this whole saga boiling over to next summer, but there is also no rush in reality.
Mollie Walker of The New York post reported that there’s reason to believe that Shesterkin’s camp is aiming for as high as $12 million a year, which would make him the highest paid goalie in the NHL.
There is little talk from Shesterkin about what exactly has transpired thus far, but there is likely a lot going on behind the scenes in terms of negotiations that the media and fanbase are just unaware about at the moment.
The 28-year-old goalie is expected to make his preseason debut tonight against the New York Islanders at Madison Square Garden.
