The Rangers re-signed Kaapo Kakko to a one-year $2.4 million contract as the team now has two options on how they could address his future in New York.

The New York Rangers have re-signed forward Kaapo Kakko to a one-year $2.4 million contract on Thursday, which is his qualifying offer.

There was a lot of speculation on how the Rangers might handle the situation of Kakko and with this contract, the team now has two options.

The Rangers can keep Kakko and see if he is able to make any sort of strides in his development.

However, New York could also try and trade Kakko as he is on an affordable contract for other teams to take on.

Kakko was selected by the Rangers with the second overall pick in the 2019 NHL Draft, but has not lived up to the high expectations that were placed upon him through his first five years in the NHL.

This past season, the 23-year-old had 13 goals, six assists and 19 points while averaging 13:16 minutes of ice time.
