Behind the scenes, Alexis Lafrenière and the Rangers have been working on a new contract.

There is a developing story regarding the New York Rangers and Alexis Lafrenière.

According to Daily Faceoff's Frank Seravalli, Lafrenière and the Rangers have had discussions about a possible eight-year, $64 million contract extension.

Seravalli points out that while there are a couple of different options on the table in terms of what Lafrenière’s next deal could look like, the one guarantee is that he will not be making under $7 million per season.

Contract talks have reportedly been ongoing all summer long and it’s only a matter of time before the Rangers take care of the 2020 first overall pick.

Lafrenière is coming off of a breakout season for the Rangers as he recorded 28 goals, 29 assists and 57 points in 82 games while truly emerging as a star in the playoffs.

Negotiations had to be shelved for Lafrenière with the Rangers needing to handle Igor Shesterkin’s situation according to Seravalli, but it seems the young forward will sign a long term contract to stay in New York sooner rather than later.
