The New York Rangers have had a busy offseason, but what has Sam Rosen been up to since his grand retirement?
It’s been a few months since Sam Rosen officially retired from his gig as the Rangers’ play-by-play broadcaster, a position he held for 40 years.
Rosen announced prior to the start of the 2024-25 campaign that it would be his final season in the broadcast booth and it was a year to remember.
The 77-year-old was honored with different tribute videos and special gifts by every opposing team during road games.
Meanwhile, the Rangers commemorated an entire game to Rosen on March 22, which included speeches, a touching tribute video, and multiple clips throughout the game shedding light to some of his most memorable calls.
“In looking back at it once I had a chance to kind of sit down and reflect on how it all went, it was overwhelming and tremendously emotional, tremendously gratifying,” Rosen said. “Virtually every city that we went to, the acknowledgement of the teams, the players, the management, the fans in virtually every city was amazing. I can't thank all those teams enough. I can't thank the players, and the coaches, and again, the management enough.
“They were just so warm and gracious and receptive. It just it hit me when the season ended that it was so rewarding that I had made contact, not personally with all the people around the league, but the contact of the emotion and the energy and the excitement that I felt throughout my career, that I had made that contact around the league, and to get the reception I got was just wonderful.”
Now that Rosen is officially retired, what will his next move be?
While Rosen won’t be calling games in the broadcast booth, he looks to stay close to the game of hockey through this next chapter of his life.
This includes remaining around the Rangers in some sort of capacity, so it’s safe to say you’ll still be seeing Rosen around.
“Chris Drury came to me prior to the end of this past season and said, ‘Sam, we're going to have a lot of events, and we'd like you to be part of them.’ And as I said to him, wholeheartedly, ‘absolutely, yes, I'm thrilled.’ Whatever they want me to do, whatever the Rangers ask of me, I'll be happy to do, because they've given me so much, and I can only continue the feelings that I have for the Rangers organization,” Rosen said about his future.
Untold Story: How Legendary Broadcaster Sam Rosen's Parents Survived The Holocaust
In a few weeks, legendary New York Rangers play-by-play announcer Sam Rosen is retiring after 40 incredible seasons.
For years and years, Rosen’s voice has been his most powerful tool and it will continue to be, in a slightly different form.
Rosen is open and eager to enter the podcasting world.
“I would say that we've had some preliminary conversations about a podcast or two,” Rosen emphasized. “I would like to do it with John Davidson. I hope he and I can collaborate on a podcast because he's been a longtime friend, and we are, to this day, close friends, and I would love to be able to do something like that. My strength has always been my ability to talk and use my mouth, and God gave me a voice that has been good to me and to fans, and I'd like to continue that somewhere along the line. So I would think a podcast would be something that I'd be interested in.”
Upon retirement, it’s common for athletes, journalists, and broadcasters to write books outlining their careers and experiences.
Rosen has decades worth of memories and valuable experience that are well worth sharing with the rest of the world.
The idea of writing a book is one that has both crossed Rosen’s mind and he’s been encouraged to do by people close to him.
“There’s nothing immediately in the works,” Rosen said about the potential of writing a book. “I know my family does want me to write a book. So yes, there's the thought of maybe writing a book. There's a question within our family as to, what type of book should it be? Should it revolve around the Rangers? Should it revolve around the Rangers championship season? Should it revolve around my entire career and what I accomplished, and where I've been, and where I went?
“So that's open for discussion, but I would say within the next couple of months we'll try to have a decision as to what road we're going to take and what road I'll take.”
Rosen has the opportunity now to spend quality time with family and pursue things he wants to do outside of his career.
However, Rosen wants a balance of taking advantage of his time away from broadcasting while also remaining a part of the NHL community.
“I still have a lot of passion, a lot of energy for the sport that I love, and sports in general, but especially hockey, and I hope to remain relevant and be able to contribute something along the way,” said Rosen. "It's been great to spend time and just relax, go to baseball games, go to graduations, play some golf, and just enjoy time in general, but as I mentioned, I still want to be involved.”
This is what post-retirement life will look like for the legendary Sam Rosen.
