Former New York Rangers forward Kaapo Kakko got his big payday this summer.
The Seattle Kraken signed Kakko to a three-year, $13.575 million contract with an average annual value of $4.525 million.
Kraken general manager Jason Botterill admitted that signing Kakko was at the top of his priorities list this summer as he believes in the 24-year-old’s potential.
“Getting a contract done with Kaapo was a top priority this summer,” Kraken general manager Jason Botterill said. "We knew quickly he'd be a big part of our team moving forward.
“He's got size, skill and tremendous playmaking ability, and isn't afraid of going to the net. He fit in immediately with our group, and we're thrilled to have him under contract.”
Kakko’s role with the Rangers was stagnant, and he was in need of a fresh start when the Blueshirts traded him to Seattle in December.

It’s going to be a make-or-break year for Mika Zibanejad with the New York <a href="https://thehockeynews.com/nhl/new-york-rangers/" target="_blank">Rangers</a>.
Almost immediately upon joining the Kraken, Kakko began to play some of the best hockey of his NHL career and seemed to unlock a version of himself that wasn’t prevalent in New York.
In 49 games with the Kraken, Kakko recorded 10 goals, 20 assists, and 30 points while averaging 17:03 minutes.
Now, Kakko will look to carry that momentum into the 2025-26 season.
