What is Mike Sullivan thinking when it comes to the New York Rangers’ captain vacancy?

The Rangers have been without a captain for nearly a year, but the team could name one before the 2024-25 season.

The overwhelming majority of people seem to believe the three clear options to fill the captain vacancy would be either Vincent Trocheck, J.T. Miller, or Adam Fox.

It’s unclear who Sullivan’s preferred choice would realistically be between those three or if he has someone else in mind, but he seems to be comfortable with the Rangers’ existing leadership core.

“The one takeaway that I have from those conversations is I think there’s a fair amount of leadership in that room,” Sullivan said. “So, whether you wear a letter or you don’t wear a letter, leadership manifests itself in so many different ways.

“I think there’s a lot of character in that room, just based on the initial conversations that I’ve had with these guys. Chris and I will work through some of those challenges.”

After the Rangers traded their former captain, Jacob Trouba, in November of this past season, they decided to name four assistant captains: Adam Fox, Chris Kreider, Artemi Panarin, and Mika Zibanejad.

As of right now, the only two teams not to have a captain are the Rangers and the Boston Bruins.
