The New York Rangers have reportedly signed restricted free agent Will Cuylle to a two-year contract extension.
Cuylle is expected to make $3.9 million per season as part of this new deal.
Despite the fear of a potential offer sheet with Cuylle officially becoming a restricted free agent, the two sides were able to strike a deal before disaster truly hit.
In his second full season with the Rangers, the 23-year-old forward recorded 20 goals, 25 assists, and 45 points in 82 games while averaging 15:05 minutes.
On top of his increased offensive production, Cuylle has transformed into a reliable two-way forward as he’s taken a role on the penalty kill.
Cuylle didn’t end up signing a long-term extension though.
Now, Cuylle will have time to prove he’s worthy of a lengthy extension in the future and could be in store for a major pay raise, especially with the cap set to rise exponentially.
On the other side of things, the Rangers will be able to evaluate Cuylle’s progression even further and assess whether they want to commit to him long-term.
All that matters is that Cuylle has been signed, and Rangers president and general manager Chris Drury could breathe a sigh of relief.
