The Rangers were one win away from winning the Stanley Cup in 1950 against the Detroit Red Wings.
Game 7 at Detroit's Olympia Stadium went to double overtime with the face-offdeep in the Rangers zone.
The New Yorkers expected coach Lynn Patrick to have reliable Edgar Laprade take
the face off and urged him to do so. Instead, Patrick ignored the pleas and sent Buddy O'Connor to face the Red Wings George Gee.
Seeing O'Connor, Gee motioned his wing, Pete Babando, to move back five feet, which Babando did.
Gee cleanly won the draw, and skimmed the rubber to Babando who backhandled the puck past goalie Chuck Rayner and Detroit won Stanley.
Adding salt to the wound, Patrick quit the Rangers and moved to Boston where he became the Bruins bench boss!
