Looking back at the Rangers' first Stanley Cup victory and how it came to be.

Only a year after the Rangers franchise was born – in 1926-27 – the New Yorkers stunned the hockey world by capturing the Stanley Cup in 1928.

The amazing Cup conquest in only two years was accomplished with not one but two substitute goalkeepers.

Lorne Chabot was the original goalie who lost the series opener to the Montreal Maroons, 2-0. In Game Two Chabot was badly injured and had to be replaced.

Incredibly, 44-year-old manager Lester Patrick – who never had been a goalie – took over and actually beat the Maroons, 2-1.

Knowing that Chabot would not be available, Patrick signed Joe Miller, who had briefly played for the woebegone New York Americans.

Somehow, Miller played the games of his life – after losing at first, 2-0 – winning the final two games,1-0 and 2-1. Thus, the Rangers employed three netminders – Chabot, Patrick and Miller – to win their first Stanley Cup!
