The Senators have signed forward Josh Bailey, the third longest-serving Islander in history, to a PTO.

The Ottawa Senators have taken a step toward potentially upgrading their bottom-six forward group, while amping up their veteran presence.
On Thursday, they signed longtime New York Islander Josh Bailey to a professional tryout. Bailey is 33 and right there with the Islander legends in longevity, playing in 1057 games. That places him third all-time behind a couple of unknown scrubs named Bryan Trottier (1123) and Denis Potvin (1060), the former Ottawa 67s great.
Bailey was selected ninth overall by the Islanders in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. He has 184 goals and 580 points in his career and seems to save his best for the playoffs, posting 16 goals and 50 points in 71 games.
This is yet another of those acquisitions, and there have been many, that have head coach D.J. Smith's fingerprints all over it. But his associate coach Jack Capuano would probably have had the loudest voice in deliberations about Bailey.
Smith knows amateur Bailey well from their time together with the OHL's Windsor Spitfires, when he and Bob Jones were assistant coaches under Bob Boughner. But Capuano knows NHL Bailey even better. Capuano was Bailey's head coach on Long Island for seven seasons.
Right now, the third line looks like it will be Dominik Kubalik, Shane Pinto (if he signs) and Mathieu Joseph. Depending on the kind of camp he has, Ridly Greig might be able to force his way into contention on that line. Until now, Greig was probably the only guy in line to provide some camp competition.
The bottom six of Parker Kelly, Mark Kastelic and Zack MacEwen likely weren't going to do that. Depending on what he has left in the tank, Bailey might also provide an upgrade there.
In a lighter angle to the signing, after J.G. Pageau was traded to the Islanders, some Senator fans weren't happy about it. They missed the player, of course, but some of them also missed singing the famous Pageau song.
For Senators fans who used to like belting out a tune at the games, Bailey comes with his own song that's every bit as catchy. We'll go head and consider this the future considerations from the 2020 Pageau deal.

While there was no mention of it in the original trade, we'll go ahead and treat the song as the future considerations from the 2020 Pageau deal.
